Hualien is located in the boundary between multiple tectonic plates which are rich in minerals and hot springs. Among Ruisui, Hongye (Red Leaf) and Antong are the three famous hot springs in Hualien. Besides natural hot spring ponds, there are modern bathhouses and hotels as well as resorts around the region such as Shin Kong Chao Feng Ranch & Resort, Fuyuan Butterfly Valley Hot Spring Resort and Grand Cosmos Resort Ruisui Hualien and ect.
Ruisui Hot Springs
Ruisui Hot Springs originate from the upper stream of Hongye Brook. It is also known as “Outer Hot Springs” as it is closer to Ruisui Town. It was first built by the Japanese in 1919 and was known as a public bathhouse called “Di-cui Ge” then.
Ruisui Hot Springs are categorized as carbonate spring. The temperature of the water is about 48 Celsius. The spring water is rich in mineral such as iron and barium, etc. When the spring water is exposed to the air, it undergoes oxidation and becomes a muddy yellowish color which tastes a bit salty and smells like rust. The mineral crystals formed on the water surface are called “hot spring flowers”. It is said that this kind of hot spring helps couples to produce boys easier alkalinity with a pH of 6 to 7. This is why it has a reputation as “Springs for giving birth to boys” and is as famous as the “Arima Onsen” in Japan.
Hongye (Red Leaf) Hot Springs
Hongye Hot Springs are located 2 km away from Ruisui Hot Springs. These two hot springs together with their source Hongye Brook form a spectacular called named “Searching paths along Hongye Brook” which was one of the eight famous views in Hualien. Hongye Hot Springs is also known as—“Inner Hot Springs” and “Outer Hot Springs” face each other across Hongye Brook.
The temperature of the sodium bicarbonate spring water is about 60-70 Celsius, which is clear and has no smell. The weak alkaline water is drinkable and can be used for bath. It is said that this kind of hot springs help smooth the skin, eliminate fatigue and relieve muscle aches/pains and arthritis. These hot springs are be classified as “Platinum-class Beauty Hot Springs”.
Antong Hot Springs
Antong Hot Springs are also called “Hongzuo Hot Springs”or “Yuli Hot Springs”. The Japanese style bungalow (tatami style) houses in Antong Hot Springs Hotel were built using Chamaecyparis obtusa (HINOKI) logs during the Japanese occupation the period. It was used as a hostel for the police during the period and is now listed as a historical heritage by Council for Cultural Affairs. “Antong Warm Bath” was one of the eight famous views in Hualien. The sulphate chloride spring water is weak alkaline, which is said to have the effects of facilitating blood circulation, relieving gastric discomfort, skin symptoms and women's diseases, etc.
